Rooibos means “red bush” in the local dialect in South Africa, and this is the only place where it is grown. “Red bush” references the plant’s distinctive red color. It is likely that Rooibos has been traditionally used as medicine by both the indigenous San and Khoikhoi in the region. Later it gained more popularity as a tisane after the British colonization, as they were keen to look for a local replacement for expensive tea from Asia. The alluring flavor of the delicious brew of the “red bush” tea was quick to spread!
Rooibos is a delicious caffeine-free, herbal tisane that is a wonderful replacement for traditional tea or coffee for those who are caffeine-sensitive. Chock full of antioxidants and other nutrients, Rooibos doesn’t fail to impress with its health benefits either. Enjoy Rooibos brewed pure and unadulterated or blended with other herbs and spices; add rock sugar or honey at your own discretion!
