Jade Oolong (Cui Yu), also known as ‘Jade Ti Guan Yin,’ is a type of Taiwanese oolong tea with a light floral aroma and an elegant, creamy, and buttery profile. The tea leaves are tightly rolled into small, dark green or jade-colored pellets, resembling jade beads, hence the name ‘Jade Oolong.’
Jade Oolong was originally a trade term used to describe some of Taiwan’s more greenish Oolong types. Tea leaves were brought from Fujian and flourished in Taiwan’s rich climate, and now Jade Oolongs are their own variety of cultivars. The oxidation of Jade Oolong is kept to 25% or less and has minimal rolling to give it its greener or ‘jade’ character. It is sometimes referred to as ‘fragrant’ Oolong due to its pleasant, flavorful aroma.
The Mingjian Village, where this tea is grown, is situated in the central highlands of Nantou. MingJian actually has the highest tea production volume in Taiwan! Situated at an elevation of 400 meters and endowed with flat plains that are extremely well-suited for tea making and processing, MingJian tea farmers produce excellent tea for everyday enjoyment.
Brewed Jade Oolong has a bright and clear greenish-golden liquor. Its flavors are smooth, floral, and slightly creamy, accompanied by a sweet and refreshing aftertaste of flowers and nuts. The aroma is often described as orchid-like, adding to the teas overall complexity. The balanced flavor has a sophistication and cleanness, lacking any bitterness or harshness, and is quite wonderful.
