Lapsang Souchong means “small leaf varietal” and is famous for its distinctive smoky flavor. One legend from the Ming dynasty claims that the process of creating Lapsong Souchong may have been discovered completely by accident! As the story goes, a large group of soldiers had once needed to make camp on a tea farm. The overcrowding happened at the same time as the tea production, which made it hard for the tea growers to process and dry the black tea in the conventional way. The farmers devised a solution of lighting fires of pine wood to hasten the drying of the tea. This process created a smoky scent and flavor which became a sensation! Lapsang Souchong became especially popular in foreign markets. Today, its smoky flavor is still a favorite. The taste and aroma, like waking up to a campfire in the mist of high mountains, is unforgettable.
